(literal translation)

“Rarely is a false sun* of good omen,
unless a wolf runs behind.”

*false sun = a parhelion, an atmospheric optical phenomenon related to the solar halo, manifesting as the appearance of two luminous images of the Sun, placed horizontally on either side of it.

According to Norse mythology, parhelia are not mere optical phenomena but the reflections of a cosmic drama: the central Sun represents Sól, the solar goddess, while the two lateral parhelia depict Sköll and Hati, the celestial wolves that pursue her. When only one parhelion appears, it is perceived as a sign of imbalance and a bad omen; two parhelia, on the other hand, signify the restoration of cosmic order. The wolf thus symbolizes the opposing force essential to the world’s harmony, the trial that gives light and goodness their true value.
